5 hospitals shuttering services in 1 month

Here are five hospitals and health systems that shuttered services in the last month:

1. Peoria, Ill.-based OSF HealthCare will discontinue intensive care and obstetrics services at its medical center in Ottawa, Ill., and transfer them to a nearby facility in Peru, Ill.

2. East Ohio Hometown Pharmacy, a full-service pharmacy in Martins Ferry for East Ohio Regional Hospital employees, patients and the community, closed permanently March 28.

3. Bar Harbour, Maine-based Mount Desert Island Hospital will close its labor and delivery unit July 1 due to a decline in births.

4. Excelsior Springs (Mo.) Hospital will close its home health and hospice services, effective April 30, citing stagnant insurance reimbursements, higher operational costs and unpredictable denials from insurers.

5. East Ohio Regional Hospital Martins Ferry laid off ancillary services March 14. Elective and outpatient services will remain on hold to strengthen efforts to prioritize payroll disbursement.
