5 movers and shakers in the ASC space

Here are five recent ASC developments and acquisitions that are shaking up the industry:

1. St. Louis-based Ascension has been offloading ASCs in an effort to reorganize its portfolio and boost its financial performance. Recently, the system sold 35 outpatient clinics and an ASC from Ascension Michigan to South Bed, Ind.-based Beacon Health System. In March, Ascension also entered an asset purchase agreement with Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare to sell eight hospitals, two ASCs, four senior living and post-acute facilities, as well as several physician practices, in Illinois.

2. Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health added eight ambulatory care sites across six states in the first quarter of 2025. In fiscal year 2024, the system added 56 ambulatory sites. “We continue to work toward the reconfiguration of our care footprint, focusing heavily on ambulatory development, as well as investments in our markets where we are experiencing rapid growth,” CFO Dan Morissette said on an investor call.

3. Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health has been bolstering their ASC strategy in recent months. The health system currently operates 36 ASCs, but that number is set to grow.  Sutter Health plans to convert a 60,000-square-foot office building into an ASC and specialty clinic space. The system also plans to construct a flagship campus in Emeryville, Calif., featuring an ambulatory care complex and a 200-bed medical center.

4. Brentwood, Tenn.-based Surgery Partners reported a record-breaking $3.1 billion in annual revenue. Meanwhile, Bain Capital Private Equity’s bid to take the company private underscores private equity’s continued interest in the ASC market. In January, Bain, which already holds a 39% stake in Surgery Partners, submitted a nonbinding acquisition proposal offering to buy all outstanding shares for $25.75 per share.

5. ASC giant United Surgical Partners International had a huge year in 2024, solidifying its position as the biggest ASC company in the country. USPI added nearly 70 ASCs in 2024, remaining “very active in both [mergers and acquisitions]  and de novo development.” The company anticipates adding 10 to 12 de novo centers in 2025.
