5 ‘must have’ skills for new residents

2025 saw record-breaking participation in the residency match program, with 47,208 certified applicants.

As thousands of future physicians nationwide prepare for their residency programs, a March 26 report from the American Medical Association lists five key skills future practitioners must have right off of the bat, according to.

Steven Angus, MD, assistant dean for graduate medical education at the University of Connecticut Health in Farmington, polled internal medicine residency program directors to determine five traits the majority believe residents need to have when entering their residency program.

Here are the five “must have” skills, and the percentage of program directors who believe residents must possess that skill:

1. The ability to gather patient medical history and perform a physical examination: 94%

2. Giving an oral summary of a patient encounter: 87%

3. Documenting a clinical encounter in handwritten or electronic format: 77%

4. The ability to participate as a contributing and integral member of an interprofessional team: 58%

5. The ability to recognize a patient requiring urgent or emergent care, initiate evaluation and management: 51%
