5 physicians on the cutting edge of GI

Here are five of the many physicians on the cutting edge of gastroenterology.

If you’d like to nominate a physician, please email pnewitt@beckershealthcare.com

Bryan Curtin, MD

Dr. Curtin is the director of The Center for Neurogastroenterology and GI Motility at The Melissa L. Posner Institute for Digestive Health & Liver Disease at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. He has specialized expertise in neurogastroenterology and gastrointestinal motility disorders.

He recently led a study published in Neurogastroenterology and Motility that evaluated the safety and tolerability of a novel, drug-free treatment for chronic idiopathic constipation — a vibrating capsule.

Arun Jesudian, MD.

Dr. Jesudian is an associate professor and transplant hepatologist at NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. He is board certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology and transplant hepatology, and holds honorary fellowships from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American Gastroenterological Association and the American College of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Jesudian recently co-authored a paper published in Gastroenterology that examined disparities in access to GI care, particularly the availability of specialists in metropolitan versus non-metropolitan counties.

Lawrence Kim, MD

Dr. Kim is a partner at South Denver Gastroenterology, a 27-physician independent GI practice. He recently began his term as the 120th president of the American Gastroenterological Association Institute.

Throughout his tenure at South Denver Gastroenterology, he has played a key role in shaping the practice’s growth and innovation. He developed a part-time partnership model to offer flexibility for physicians, and was instrumental in recruiting more female gastroenterologists, who now make up one-third of the practice. Dr. Kim also expanded the practice’s clinical capabilities by incorporating endoscopic ultrasound into its advanced endoscopy service line and launching a clinical research program.

Simon Mathews, MD.

Dr. Mathews is a gastroenterologist at WellSpan Health in Baltimore and serves as chair of the AGA’s GI Innovation and Technology Committee. The committee supports the development of new technologies in gastroenterology, hepatology, nutrition and obesity, and guides innovators through the medical device and therapeutics development process.

Carol Rouphael, MD

Dr. Rouphael is a gastroenterologist at the Cleveland Clinic. She recently co-authored a study that found increasing rates of early-onset gastrointestinal cancers are primarily driven by cancers of the luminal GI tract.

The study, titled “Early-Onset Incidence and Birth Cohort Effects in Luminal Versus Extraluminal Gastrointestinal Cancers,” was presented at this year’s Digestive Disease Week Annual Meeting in San Diego.
