5 recent gastroenterology advances

Here are five recent clinical and technological advances in gastroenterology, as reported by Becker’s:

1. Worcester, Mass.-based UMass Chan Medical School became the first medical center to complete a procedure using the WallFlex Biliary Plus RX fully covered stent. The procedure was performed by Neil Marya, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the division of gastroenterology at UMass Chan, who was assisted by his GI team.

2. AdventHealth Tampa (Fla.) has opened a Center for Interventional Endoscopy, the only interventional endoscopy center in the Tampa Bay region.

3. An interrupted time series analysis published April 14 in Cancer found that cancer diagnoses in Puerto Rico dropped significantly during and after Hurricanes Irma and Maria and the COVID-19 pandemic, but later rebounded, revealing troubling concerns about a possible connection between natural disasters and CRC-detection rates. The study underscored needs to enhance healthcare infrastructure in disaster-prone regions.

4. Nanosonics has received FDA de novo clearance for its new Coris system, a technology designed to improve the cleaning of flexible endoscopes and reduce infection risk.

5. Approximately 1 in 26 women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in their lifetime. Despite this, many women may mistake early warning signs of CRC for menopause-related issues or other digestive conditions. In a March 17 news release, New Brunswick, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas Health highlighted the importance of early CRC screening for women.
