The University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School in Worcester, Mass., and Burlington, Mass.-based Lahey Hospital and Medical Center will work together to open a new medical campus in Burlington, Mass Live reported Aug. 18. Both the medical school and the hospital have signed a nonbinding letter of intent for the new campus, which will train healthcare workers. The plan needs to be approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the New England Commission of Higher Education. “UMass Chan and Lahey share a common vision of training future generations of physicians grounded in evidence-based, patient-centered, multispecialty and interprofessional practice,” Michael Collins, MD, chancellor of UMass Chan Medical School, told Mass Live. “We look forward to welcoming Lahey Hospital & Medical Center as one of our outstanding clinical affiliates.”The first class of the new campus is expected in the summer of 2024. Programs at the campus will include “a focus on leadership, health system science and interprofessional education.” The school will follow UMass Chan Medical School’s core curriculum and will offer the university’s third-year clerkship rotations. The majority of attending students’ fourth year will be rotations under Lahey Hospital faculty. Both organizations hope the school will ease the industry wide healthcare staffing shortage. “This partnership would bring together two world class institutions dedicated to preparing medical students to excel in a fast-changing health care environment,” Marty Meehan, president of the University of Massachusetts told the publication. “Lahey will join a family of UMass Chan clinical affiliates that are providing excellent training to a new generation of physicians in every region of the commonwealth.”
