5 things to know about the 5 biggest GI groups

Here are five things to know about the five GI groups dominating the industry:

1. GI Alliance (Southlake, Texas)

  • Employs 786 physicians
  • Has more than 300 affiliated practices 
  • CEO is James Weber, MD
  • In early 2024, GI Alliance partnered with Ambience Healthcare to develop a suite of AI documentation tools, specifically for gastroenterology. 
  • In 2022, GI Alliance finalized its physician-led buyout facilitated by a $785 million investment from private equity firm Apollo Hybrid Value.

2. Gastro Health (Miami) 

  • Employs over 400 physicians
  • Has more than 150 locations in Florida, Alabama, Washington, Virginia, Ohio, Maryland and Massachusetts. 
  • Alan Oliver,COO, was named interim CEO earlier this year. 
  • In February, Gastro Health finalized a partnership with Gastroenterology and Nutrition Specialists in Orlando, Fla. 
  • The company has made about 30 other deals in the GI space over the last five years. 

3. One GI (Brentwood, Tenn.) 

  • Employs approximately 196 physicians
  • Operates  in 65 locations 
  • CEO is Christa Newton, appointed to the position in August 2023. 
  • One GI is backed by private-equity firm Webster Equity Partners
  • One GI acquired Dayton (Ohio) Gastroenterology, the second-largest independent GI practice in the state, in March 2022. 

4. U.S. Digestive Health 

  • Employs more than 225 physicians
  • Has more than 60 offices, ASCs and clinical research sites.
  • Locations are clustered in Pennsylvania and Delaware
  • CEO is Jerry Tillinger
  • The group was formed by private equity firm Amulet Capital Partners 

 

5. United Digestive (Atlanta)

  • Employs over 300 physicians
  • Has 60 clinics and 22 ASCs 
  • Operates across Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina

In March 2023, private equity firm Kohlberg & Company acquired United Digestive for $500 million from Frazier.
