American Electric Power Ohio shut off power at Martins Ferry-based East Ohio Regional Hospital and its medical office buildings after the system did not pay its bills for more than one year, according to an April 3 report from The Times Leader.
The electric company originally cut the power April 1, but it was turned back on for 24 hours to allow employees to move out of the buildings. It was officially turned off again April 2.
The power company allegedly made several unsuccessful attempts to help the system get up to date on its bills, according to the report.
The main hospital closed its doors March 20 after employees reported going weeks without payment; however, some employees have continued to serve patients onsite.
Physicians have since started canceling future appointments with patients and moving office supplies out of the buildings and into their personal vehicles, according to the report.
Justine Shreve, part owner of the practice and office manager, told the Leader that staff did not receive a notice that the power would be shut off. She also noted that there were patients in the buildings when the power was cut, and staffers were worried about individuals who may be stuck in the elevator.
