Two owners of a Warwick, R.I.-based pain clinic have been indicted for healthcare fraud, according to an April 7 news release from the Justice Department.
What happened?
- Brandon Nowak and Jason Simmons, who run Alternative Integrative Medicine, allegedly submitted false claims to Medicare, Medicaid Managed Care and four private insurers starting in October 2020.
- The indictment alleges they billed for services never rendered, including massage therapy disguised as covered treatments like acupuncture and physical therapy.
- The indictment also claims the clinic charged for services such as infrared therapy and self-care training, none of which were provided, by unqualified or nonexistent staff.
What’s next?
- Mr. Nowak and Mr. Simmons face one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and 14 counts of healthcare fraud. They are scheduled to be arraigned April 11.
