As gastroenterology practices adapt to an evolving healthcare landscape, several major deals and partnerships are reshaping the field.
Here are five such moves to know:
1. Chicago-based GI Partners of Illinois announced a partnership with Athelas to implement its AI-powered revenue cycle management (RCM) services. The deal will allow GI Partners — the state’s largest independent, physician-led gastroenterology practice — to integrate Athelas’ platform across its network, automating claims processing, reducing denials, and improving overall revenue cycle performance.
2. In November, Dublin, Ohio-based Cardinal Health acquired a majority stake in GI Alliance for $2.8 billion, marking one of the largest transactions in the gastroenterology space in recent
years. According to a blog post from VMG Health, the acquisition reflects a growing trend of pharmaceutical-focused healthcare companies entering the physician practice space. Traditionally known for distributing pharmaceuticals and medical products, Cardinal Health is now among a new wave of buyers — including insurers, pharma companies, and medical equipment distributors — pursuing physician group acquisitions to create vertically integrated care platforms.
3. Gastroenterology Associates of Fredericksburg (Md.) has sold to Fredericksburg-based Mary Washington Medical Group, an affiliate of Mary Washington Healthcare. The GI practice will be renamed Mary Washington Gastroenterology, and its two sites will be integrated into departments of Fredericksburg-based Mary Washington Hospital and Stafford (Va.) Hospital.
4. Gastroenterology Associates of Ithaca (N.Y.) has partnered with Sayre, Pa.-based Guthrie, a multispecialty group practice with locations throughout New York and Pennsylvania. Under the partnership, all GAI endoscopic procedures will now take place at Guthrie Ithaca City Harbor or Guthrie Cortland (N.Y.) Medical Center.
5. GI Alliance has launched a new population health management program, which includes chronic care and principal care management initiatives. The program will be powered by GI Alliance partner Cosán, a provider of comprehensive population health services. Cosán aims to deliver a balance of technology, insights, and human care to patients between office visits.
