The 10 top-paying cities for nurse practitioners

Nurse practitioners in the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif., area have the highest average annual salary of any metropolitan area in the U.S. for the profession, making $223,530 per year.

Nine out of the 10 metropolitan areas where nurse practitioners earn the most are in California. 

Across the U.S., nurse practitioners earn an average of $132,000 each year. 

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released updated compensation data for nurse practitioners April 2 to reflect 2024 information. 

Here are the 10 metropolitan areas where nurse practitioners have the highest mean annual salary:

  1. San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif.: $223,530
  2. San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, Calif.: $208,480
  3. Napa, Calif.: $202,690
  4. Vallejo, Calif.: $184,590
  5. Monroe, Mich.: $179,250
  6. Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom, Calif.: $168,790
  7. Bakersfield-Delano, Calif.: $168,180
  8. Santa Maria-Santa Barbara, Calif.: $167,590
  9. Salinas, Calif.: $167,400
  10. Santa Rosa-Petaluma, Calif.: $166,600
