Physician burnout rates have dropped below 45% for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a May 1 report from the American Medical Association.
The AMA’s Organizational Biopsy report surveyed 18,000 physicians across 43 states and more than 100 health systems.
According to the most recent report, 43.2% of physicians reported experiencing at least one symptom of burnout, down from 48.2% in 2023 and 53% in 2022.
Physician job satisfaction is also on the rise, growing from 72.1% in 2023 to 76.5% in 2024.
Physician job stress is also dropping, with 45.1% of physicians reporting feeling a great deal of stress due to their job, down from 50.7% in 2023 and 55.6% in 2022.
The largest reported causes of physician stress are ineffective EHR systems, documentation requirements, physician and support staff shortages, administrative tasks, lack of support and transparency from leadership, and limited control over their schedules.
