Close to 50% of physicians work with an incompletely staffed team at least 25% of the time, according to a May 14 report published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
The report surveyed close to 1,000 physicians across 15 organizations. About two-thirds of the respondents worked full-time, and 64.4% worked only in outpatient settings.
Data was collected between Dec. 13, 2022, and March 31, 2025.
Here are three more findings to know from the report:
- The percentage of physicians working without a fully staffed team varied by specialty, at 44.8% of primary care physicians, 38.5% of medical physicians, 49.3% of surgical physicians and 62.4% of other specialties.
- Physicians who worked with understaffed teams experienced a higher prevalence of burnout, with more than 60% of those without fully staffed teams more than a quarter of the time reporting being burnt out, compared to 35.8% for those with fully staffed teams.
- Of the 970 physician respondents, 47.9% met the criteria for burnout.
