U.S. gastroenterologists saw a 3% decline in compensation from 2023 to 2024, with their annual salaries dropping from $512,000 to $495,000, according to Medscape’s “Gastroenterologist Compensation Report 2025,” published May 16.
For the survey, Medscape polled 7,322 gastroenterologists between Oct. 3 and Jan. 15.
Here are eight things to know about GI compensation:
1. Gastroenterologists rank as the sixth highest-paid physician specialty, beat out by orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, plastic surgeons, cardiologists and anesthesiologists.
2. On average, gastroenterologists put in 53 hours of work per week.
3. Thirty-seven percent of gastroenterologists said they feel fairly compensated.
4. A majority of gastroenterologists (74%) believe all physicians are unfairly compensated.
5. A majority of gastroenterologists (71%) said their compensation adequately covers their family needs.
6. While GIs on average saw a decline in compensation from 2023 to 2024, 40% of GIs saw no change in their compensation and 38% saw an increase in pay.
7. Nearly half of GIs (46%) have productivity metrics impacting their compensation.
8. Thirty-two percent of GIs take extra work to bolster their income.
