Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center’s cardiac surgery program has earned a three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
The three-star accolade is the highest awarded by the STS, according to a June 5 news release. Penn State also earned three-star ratings for isolated coronary artery bypass grafting, isolated aortic valve replacement surgery and multi-procedural composite measures.
STS awards the three-star rating by reviewing a combination of quality measures for specific procedures. Approximately 4% to 8% of participants receive a three-star rating for isolated AVR surgery and approximately 20% of hospital participants receive a three-rating for isolated CABG surgery.
STS’ database was founded in 1989 and includes nearly 6.9 million surgical records from more than 3,800 surgeons and anesthesiologists, representing more than 90% of U.S. hospitals that perform heart surgeries.
