Physicians at the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute completed the world’s first robotic transcatheter aortic valve replacement explant and aortic valve replacement.
The procedure was performed by Vinay Badhwar, MD, executive chair of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute; cardiac surgeons Ali Darehzereshki, MD, Goya Raikar, MD, J. Hunter Mehaffey, MD, and Lawrence Wei, MD; and cardiologist Ramesh Daggubati, MD, according to a June 4 news release.
The patient was discharged from the WVU Medicine Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit less than a week after undergoing the procedure.
TAVR is used to treat aortic stenosis, especially in older patients or individuals with surgical risk.
