James Flaherty, MD, an interventional cardiologist and associate professor of medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, serves as medical director of the hospital’s coronary care unit. He specializes in advanced therapies for structural heart disease, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement, acute coronary syndromes and transradial coronary interventions.
Dr. Flaherty’s leadership philosophy centers on trust and adaptability — traits he says are essential when leading high-acuity cardiac teams. He credits the culture of multidisciplinary collaboration at Northwestern with accelerating the adoption of minimally invasive valve technologies and improving patient outcomes.
“You can’t just rely on clinical knowledge,” he told Becker’s. “Success in the catheterization lab hinges on seamless communication, mutual respect and quick thinking.”
He has served as principal investigator for several clinical trials focused on valve therapies and coronary interventions, and he directs the Chicago Case-Based Coronary & Structural Heart Intervention Update, a continuing medical education conference. Dr. Flaherty has been recognized for his contributions to medical education, including receiving the Department of Medicine’s Teaching Excellence Award.
Dr. Flaherty earned his medical and master’s degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo and completed residency and fellowships in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology at Northwestern University’s McGaw Medical Center.
