Here are five physician group deals to know from the last year:
1. Grass Valley, Calif.-based Dignity Health Medical Group — Sierra Nevada, a service of Dignity Health Medical Foundation, acquired Sierra Nevada Gastroenterology, also based in Grass Valley. The clinic closed June 9 and reopened June 16, rebranded as Dignity Health Medical Group — Sierra Nevada.
2. In January, Optum, parent company of ASC chain SCA Health, agreed to acquire infusion network FlexCare Infusion, an ambulatory infusion network based in Oklahoma City. According to the company’s website, FlexCare has 30 clinic locations across Alabama, Arizona and Oklahoma.
3. In November, Dallas-based GI Alliance entered a definitive agreement with Dublin, Ohio-based pharmaceutical distributor and healthcare services company Cardinal Health in which Cardinal will acquire a majority stake in GI Alliance. Gastroenterology group management company GI Alliance is holding its position as the largest network of GI providers in the U.S., with over 300 practices in its network and more than 900 affiliated providers in 2024.
4. In November, Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health completed its acquisition of UCI Medical Affiliates from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina. The purchase includes 52 Doctors Care and 20 Progressive Therapy Clinics, which are staffed by nearly 200 physicians and advanced practice providers. Doctors Care is the largest and most established urgent care provider in South Carolina, opening its first minor emergency medical center in Columbia in 1981.
5. In October, financially troubled Steward Health Care finalized the sale of its physician group to Nashville, Tenn.-based primary care provider Rural Healthcare Group, part of private equity firm Kinderhook Industries. The sale is part of the hospital system’s plan to mitigate financial distress — Steward sought Chapter 11 protection on May 6 and is required to sell its assets through auctions.
