The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care has released a new pain management ambulatory surgery care toolkit, a resource designed to help healthcare professionals address safe and effective pain control, according to a news release shared with Becker’s.
The tool kit provides evidence-based strategies to reduce opioid reliance, promote patient education and integrate procedure-specific interventions throughout perioperative care.
It emphasizes pain management strategies like nonopioid medication uses, regional blocks, and non-pharmaceutical therapies. It also includes a series of practical checklists.
With ambulatory procedures accounting for 60% to 65% of all surgeries in the U.S.,the AAAHC believes outpatient facilities face a responsibility to implement safe and consistent practices to help prevent complications such as delayed discharge, readmission and prolonged opioid use.
