An anesthesiologist currently on probation for drug use at work is facing potential license revocation, ABC Team 10 reported April 11.
What happened?
- The California Medical Board filed a complaint on April 3 alleging that Anna Bowling, MD, violated several terms of her probation.
- These violations include failing to complete required drug and alcohol testing on two occasions in 2024, including once in January, failing to ensure her workplace monitor submitted mandatory reports and failing to provide a required fluid sample in May 2023.
- Dr. Bowling’s medical license was placed on a seven-year probation in March 2024. This disciplinary action followed a 2022 incident in which she injected herself with an anesthetic while at work to continue treating patients.
- Dr. Bowling, who is also a certified life coach based in Carlsbad, Calif., was found to be under the influence of propofol while working at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas on May 5, 2022. A spokesperson from Scripps confirmed to Becker’s that she has not worked at the hospital since that year.
- Dr. Bowling also admitted she stole other narcotics, including fentanyl, hydromorphone and midazolam, 11 or 12 times in April 2022.
What’s next?
- The California Medical Board has yet to schedule a hearing to determine further disciplinary action regarding Dr. Bowling’s license.
