ASC speaker spotlight: Brian Gantwerker, MD, Neurosurgeon and President at The Craniospinal Center of Los Angeles

Brian Gantwerker, MD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon and president of The Craniospinal Center of Los Angeles, where he specializes in the surgical and nonsurgical treatment of complex spinal and neurological disorders. A fellowship-trained expert in complex spine surgery, Dr. Gantwerker pairs advanced techniques  — such as spinal endoscopy and neuro-navigation — with deeply personalized patient care.

For Dr. Gantwerker, leadership means advocating for patients while challenging the status quo.

“The most important lesson I’ve learned is that innovation doesn’t matter if it isn’t matched by empathy,” he said. “Patients remember how you treat them more than how you treat their condition.”

This philosophy guides his efforts both in the operating room and in policy, where he is an active voice for neurosurgeons and ASC leaders.

A frequent contributor to Becker’s Spine Review and Becker’s ASC Review, Dr. Gantwerker also holds several leadership roles, including secretary of the California Association of Neurological Surgeons and delegate to the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies. He sits on the legislative committees of the North American Spine Society and California Medical Association, where he helps shape healthcare policy affecting surgical practices.

Dr. Gantwerker earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College and completed his neurosurgery residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland, where he also conducted research in spinal cord regeneration with stem cells at Case Western Reserve University. He completed a complex spine fellowship at the Barrow Neurological Institute.Dr. Gantwerker is speaking at Becker’s 31st Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, set for Oct. 16-18 at the Swissotel Chicago.
