Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health has submitted a proposal to the state requesting the relocation of operating rooms from Gateway Surgery Center in Concord, N.C., to Atrium Health Cabarrus, also in Concord, according to a March 17 report from The Charlotte Observer.
The relocation is part of a $9.2 million project aiming to bring additional surgical services to the county.
Atrium Health Cabarrus is the only hospital in the county, according to the report, and has seen a major increase in demand for surgical cases since 2019. Cases have grown from 10,457 in 2019 to more than 12,000 in 2024.
The hospital houses 17 operating rooms and has submitted a certificate of need to acquire two rooms from Gateway Surgery Center.
If the state approves, the new operating rooms are expected to open in the hospital in July 2027. One operating room will be in a previously used, vacated operating space, while the second will be in a room currently used for storage.
