Bon Secours Mercy Health and Compass Surgical Partners’ partnership: 5 things to know

In May 2023, Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health and Raleigh, N.C.-based Compass Surgical Partners announced plans to partner for outpatient surgical care expansion.

Bon Secours Mercy Health is one of the largest health systems in the U.S. and has more than 1,200 care sites, while Compass Surgical Partners is an ASC management partner that has developed more than 250 ASCs in the past 30 years.

Here are five additional things to know about the joint venture:

1. The first ASC in the strategic partnership, Springfield (Ohio) Regional Outpatient Surgery Center, opened its doors in January 2024.

2. Since the partnership began, Bon Secours and Compass have opened four joint venture ASCs.

3. The partnership’s overarching goal is to develop 30 ASCs across multiple states.

4. Bon Secours Mercy Health plans to build ASCs in all states it currently operates in, including Kentucky, Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New York and Florida. The network is also eyeing expansion into new states, including North Carolina.

5. When it comes to growing a system’s outpatient footprint, Bon Secours believes that speed-to-market is the most important aspect.

“Speed to market is critical. Each system will need to weigh build, buy or partner options to find the necessary talent and systems. Health systems will also have to determine the best course of action to retain volumes in their networks while — at the same time — identifying opportunities that will increase ambulatory share and attract new physicians,” David Cannady, chief strategy officer of Bon Secours Mercy Health, told Becker’s.
