Cardiologist pay in 2025: 8 things to know

Cardiologists saw a 4% decline in compensation from 2023 to 2024, with their annual pay dropping from $525,000 to $506,000, according to Medscape’s Cardiologist Compensation Report 2025,” published May 16. 

For the survey, Medscape polled 7,322 gastroenterologists between Oct. 3 and Jan. 15.

1. Cardiologists rank as the fourth highest-paid physician specialty, beat out by orthopedic surgeons, radiologists and plastic surgeons.

2. On average, cardiologists put in 58 hours of work per week. 

3. Fifty-two percent of cardiologists said they feel fairly compensated. 

4. A majority of cardiologists (56%) believe all physicians are unfairly compensated. 

5. A majority of cardiologists (71%) said their compensation adequately covers their family needs.

6. While cardiologists on average saw a decline in compensation from 2023 to 2024, 41% of cardiologists saw no change in their compensation and 39% saw an increase in pay. 

7. Nearly half of cardiologists (48%) have productivity metrics impacting their compensation.

8. Twenty-six percent of cardiologists take extra work to bolster their income.
