Healthcare workers, community members and elected officials protested outside Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pa., in response to Crozer Health’s plan to end several services, WHYY reported May 4.

Several hospitals are scaling back services for a variety of reasons, including financial challenges and staffing issues. 

Commonwealth Health will end emergency services at its emergency room in Tunkhannock, Pa., July 1, the organization said May 2.

The governing board of MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham, Mass., voted unanimously not to support Tenet Healthcare’s decision to close outpatient oncology services, the Framingham Source reported April 28. 

Durham, N.C.-based Duke Health and Chapel Hill-based University of North Carolina Health are competing to add beds in the state, WUNC reported April 25.

Cleveland, Texas-based Emergency Hospital Systems is combining two hospitals it owns, effective April 29, Bluebonnet News reported April 25.

Police said Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago was put under a temporary lockdown April 24 after someone made a threatening phone call to the facility, according to NBC 5 Chicago.

Several hospitals are scaling back inpatient services or ending inpatient care. 

Springfield, Pa.-based Crozer Health will end some substance abuse and mental health services in June due to challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, NPR affiliate WHYY reported April 21.

Tampa, Fla.-based Shriners Hospitals for Children is transitioning its Springfield, Mass., campus into an outpatient clinic model, NBC/CW affiliate WWLP reported April 20.
