A Wilmington, Del.-based physician has been accused of submitting false Medicare claims for medically unnecessary genetic tests, the Justice Department said in a July 7 news release.
What happened?
- Between April 2019 and November 2019, Shayasta Mufti, MD, allegedly referred more than 100 Medicare beneficiaries for genetic tests that were not medically necessary and were ultimately reimbursed by Medicare.
- According to the government, Dr. Mufti had no prior medical relationship with the beneficiaries, did not physically examine them, and never used the test results to inform any treatment or care plans.
- The referrals were reportedly based on brief telemedicine consultations, and in some cases, no consultation at all.
