Endoscopy center faces lawsuit alleging near-fatal colonoscopy

A patient of Naples, Fla.-based Premier Endoscopy Center is suing the ASC and one of its physicians after she allegedly nearly died during a routine colonoscopy, WINK News reported May 5.

What happened?

  • Elaine Bredehoft has filed a lawsuit against Scott Wiesen, MD, and Premier Endoscopy Center, alleging medical malpractice during a 2023 colonoscopy. According to the suit, Dr. Wiesen punctured her colon and mistakenly removed her ovary and fallopian tube, believing them to be polyps.
  • Ms. Bredehoft says she awoke from the procedure in extreme pain and waited approximately 30 minutes before an ambulance was called. She was transported to NCH North Hospital, where another physician performed emergency surgery, discovered a bleeding colon, and administered 52 stitches.
  • Following surgery, Ms. Bredehoft developed a serious infection that required additional hospitalization and extensive at-home wound care.
  • According to the lawsuit, she was later informed that Dr. Wiesen had been suffering from dementia and retired shortly after the incident. However, WINK News allegedly found that his medical license remains active and that the Florida Board of Medicine has not received notification of his retirement.
  • Dr. Wiesen has previously faced malpractice allegations. State records show he settled two prior claims, one involving a fatal colonoscopy and another for a misdiagnosed small bowel obstruction that also resulted in death.

Premier Endoscopy Center declined WINK News’ request for comment. Becker’s has reached out to the center and will update this story if more information becomes available.
