Female ophthalmology residents log fewer procedural hours than their male counterparts, according to a study published May 1 in JAMA Ophthalmology.
The study determined that female residents logged 4.4% fewer cataract cases and 7.4% fewer total procedures between 2014 and 2023.
It also determined that residents who were members of underrepresented races and ethnicities performed 5.3% fewer total operations.
The study looked at all 4,811 U.S. ophthalmology resident graduates from 2014 through 2023, with the study cohort made up of 1,999 female and 2,812 male residents, as well as 343 residents from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups.
