HCA Healthcare’s best practices for physician recruitment, retention

Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare has a network of 190 hospitals, more than 2,500 care sites and more than 44,000 physicians, making it one of the largest players in the healthcare industry.

Three of the organization’s physician leaders recently shared how HCA Healthcare navigates physician recruitment and retention with the American Medical Association.

Here are 9 things to know about HCA’s best practices:

  1. The company is training more than 5,400 resident and fellow physicians across the U.S. In March, HCA offered more than 2,100 residency positions and filled more than 98% of them.
  2. HCA is combating the projected physician shortage with its graduate medical education program, which allows them to recruit medical students, train them in their care delivery models and retain them within their clinical settings and environments.
  3. The organization has 79 teaching hospitals across 16 states to support its GME program.
  4. Investing in the newest technologies and bringing physicians into the decision making process is another way that HCA keeps its physicians engaged.
  5. Among the top investments the company has made to improve the experience for both physicians and patients are healthcare AI as well as digital transformation and innovation to reduce administrative burdens.
  6. Promoting physician well-being is key to HCA’s recruiting, training and retention efforts.
  7. The company has a Physician Wellness Research Lab to study scientifically-based approaches to well-being to help residents find work-life balance.
  8. HCA partners with organizational psychologists at Claremont Graduate University in California to research the wellness of residents and fellows at the company’s working and learning environments.
  9. The organization’s Physician Leadership Academy is another tool used by HCA. In 2024, the academy produced 36 chief medical officers across HCA Healthcare.
