HCA’s outpatient growth accelerates: 5 takeaways from a $18.3B Q1

Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare continues to see outpatient care driving a growing share of its business, according to first-quarter financial results released April 25.

Outpatient revenues accounted for 37.3% of total patient revenues in 2025, up from 36.9% in 2024.

Here are five more things to know:

1. HCA grew its network of freestanding ASCs to 125 in 2025, up from 121 centers in 2024.

2. HCA reported an operating income of $2.3 billion (a 12.7% margin) for the first quarter of 2025, compared to $2.2 billion (a 13% margin) during the same period last year.

3. First-quarter revenues reached $18.3 billion, up from $17.3 billion in the first quarter of 2024.

4. Same-facility inpatient surgeries increased 0.2%, while outpatient surgeries declined 2.1% compared to the first quarter of 2024.

5. After factoring in nonoperating expenses, HCA reported a net income of $1.61 billion (an 8.8% margin) for the first quarter, up slightly from $1.59 billion in the same quarter last year.
