Hospital’s stake in ASCs hits all-time high

Hospital and health system ownership of ASCs has nearly doubled in five years, according to Avanza’s Intelligence Hospital Leadership ASC Survey.

In 2024, 82% of hospitals and health systems own at least one ASC, up from 41% in 2019 and 48% just last year.

Here are five more statistics from the survey:

1. Nearly all hospitals are doubling down on ASCs: 90% of hospitals and health systems plan to continue investing in ASCs in 2024, up from 70% in 2023.

2. Among hospitals and health systems that own ASCs, 57% now own two or more, up from 47% in 2023.

3. About 75% of hospitals and health systems structure their ASCs as joint ventures — a trend that has remained steady over the past five years.

4. Of the survey respondents, 67% said they prefer to hold a majority stake in ASC partnerships, an increase from 64% in 2023.

5. Sixty-three percent of hospitals and health systems report that payers are pressuring them to expand ASC options.
