A physician in Illinois has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for billing Medicaid and private insurers for nonexistent and unnecessary services.
Mona Ghosh, MD, owned and operated a medical clinic in Hoffman Estates, Ill., specializing in obstetrics and gynecology services. From 2018 to 2022, Dr. Ghosh submitted fraudulent claims to Medicaid, Tricare and other insurers for procedures and services that were not necessary, according to a June 10 news release from the Justice Department.
In addition, Dr. Ghosh overstated the length of in-office and telemedicine visits, submitted claims using billing codes which did not apply and prepared false patient medical records.
In 2024, Dr. Ghosh pleaded guilty to two counts of healthcare fraud.
In addition to the sentence, Dr. Ghosh was ordered to pay about $1.5 million in restitution, the release said.
