Indiana physician charged with prescription fraud

A Greenwood, Ind.-based physician was arrested for allegedly fraudulently prescribing and repurchasing controlled substances, the Daily Journal reported May 13.

What happened?

  • Derrick Hasenour, MD, chief medical director at Windrose Health Network, was caught by federal agents buying 30 Oxycodone pills that he had originally prescribed from a confidential police informant.
  • The sting was prearranged and monitored by law enforcement following reports that Dr. Hasenour had been prescribing drugs like Fentanyl and Oxycodone and then purchasing them back from patients, according to the report.
  • In a post-arrest interview, Dr. Hasenour admitted to struggling with opioid addiction for nearly a year. He faces four initial charges, including two counts of dealing, possession of a controlled substance and prescription fraud.
  • Windrose Health Network has placed Dr. Hasenour on unpaid leave and stated it is fully cooperating with authorities, according to the Daily Journal. Patient services and safety protocols remain in place under interim clinical leadership, and the organization plans to conduct an internal review, CEO Scott Rollett said in a statement to the publication.
