Anissa Maroof, MD, a physician in Potomac, Md., pleaded guilty to a single federal count of unlawfully distributing and dispensing controlled substances.
Between January 2019 and June 2022, Dr. Maroof distributed alprazolam, amphetamine-dextroamphetamine and buprenorphine outside the scope of professional practice and not for a legitimate medical purpose, according to a May 9 news release from the Justice Department.
Dr. Maroof had been indicted on seven counts of dispensing controlled substances in April 2024, but pleaded guilty to a single charge.
Dr. Maroof owned and operated a practice in Bethesda, Md., from which she provided patients in West Virginia with prescriptions for controlled substances, according to the Justice Department.
On multiple occasions, Dr. Maroof called in prescriptions to pharmacies without seeing the patient and then directed the patient to leave cash underneath her office door in exchange for writing the prescription, according to the Justice Department.
Dr. Maroof faces a maximum of 20 years in prison followed by up to three years of supervised release. She is scheduled for sentencing Aug. 19.
