The number of ASCs treating Medicare beneficiaries continued to rise in 2023, with an increasing volume of procedures and spending, according to the latest report from the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission.
Here are five key facts to know:
1. The total number of Medicare-certified ASCs increased by 2.5% in 2023, reaching 6,308 facilities. This growth rate was slightly higher than the average annual increase of 2.2% seen from 2018 to 2022.
2. Over the course of the year, 250 new ASCs opened, while 95 facilities either closed or merged with others, resulting in a net gain of 155 ASCs.
3. The fee-for-service Medicare program and its beneficiaries spent approximately $6.8 billion on ASC services in 2023.
4. The number of surgical procedures performed at ASCs per FFS Medicare beneficiary increased by 5.7% in 2023, a significant jump compared to the 0.6% annual average growth rate recorded between 2018 and 2022.
5. Specialization remains a dominant trend in the ASC market, with 68% of Medicare-billing ASCs in 2023 focusing on a single clinical area.
