MercyOne postponing surgeries after anesthesia provider breakup

Des Moines, Iowa-based MercyOne Medical Center has been delaying procedures amid a shake-up with its longtime anesthesia partner, according to a June 6 report from CBS affiliate KCCI.

The system announced plans to end its partnership with anesthesia services provider Medical Center Anesthesiologists on May 15, saying it was “necessary” to find a new partner.

Just one week later, MercyOne partnered with California-based physician group Vituity, which will provide anesthesia care at all of MercyOne’s Central Iowa and Des Moines-based locations. The new anesthesia partnership began May 31.

Now, MercyOne has issued a statement saying it is prioritizing surgeries on a case-by-case basis, pushing back dates and times for some procedures.

“We regret any stress and inconvenience this may cause, but we can assure patients we will only reschedule to bring the best level of care they have come to expect at MercyOne,” the system told KCCI.
