New Hampshire physician pleads guilty to illegal opioid prescription

Columbia, N.H.-based Robert Soucy, DO, has pleaded guilty to unlawfully distributing controlled substances, according to a May 13 news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

What happened?

  • Dr. Soucy admitted to illegally prescribing opioids from his home without legitimate medical purpose. Aware that local pharmacies would not fill certain prescriptions, he instructed a patient to seek out pharmacies in other locations to obtain the medications.
  • Despite knowing that the patient had a substance use disorder, Dr. Soucy continued to prescribe opioids without conducting any medical evaluations or tests. He persisted in writing prescriptions even after the patient had relocated out of New England.
  • Dr. Soucy faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
