A Great Neck, N.Y.-based gastroenterologist has been charged with grand larceny for allegedly collecting more than $100,000 in Social Security Disability and Early Retirement benefits while continuing to work and bill Medicare, the Nassau County District Attorney’s office said in a June 11 news release.
What happened?
- Between September 2021 and May 2025, Joseph Golyan, MD, allegedly treated patients and billed Medicare for over $700,000 in services while receiving disability and retirement benefits. Despite earning income, Dr. Golyan applied for and received Social Security Disability benefits, failing to fully disclose his ongoing work and financial resources.
- In 2022, the Social Security Administration contacted Dr. Golyan about his employment status. He admitted to limited work but did not report the full extent of his income. His benefits were temporarily revoked, but he reapplied in 2023, citing injuries from a car accident, and was approved again, receiving an additional $66,801 in disability payments.
- Investigators allege he used multiple National Provider Identifiers tied to different medical entities to continue billing Medicare while claiming he was unable to work.
What’s next?
- He was arraigned on June 9, pleaded not guilty, and was released under pre-trial supervision. He faces felony charges of Grand Larceny in the Second and Third Degrees and is due back in court on June 20, 2025.
