The Orthopedic Surgery Center of Palm Beach County in Boynton Beach, Fla., has tackled multiple process improvements in the last year to make a big impact on the center’s financial success.
The most impactful changes include:
- Streamlining case scheduling and pre-admission workflows. “By improving communication between the business office, clinical teams and physician offices, we reduced last-minute cancellations and ensured patients were better prepared for surgery,” Heather Colón, CEO of the surgery center, told Becker’s.
- Optimized supply chain. Ms. Colón worked with the ASC’s materials manager to standardize implants and supplies. The outcome was lower costs and improved OR turnover efficiency.
- Cross-training. The ASC cross-trained team members for more flexible staffing and additional collaboration. “This was particularly effective when facing scrub tech and OR circulator shortages,” Ms. Colón said.
The financial impact is clear and permeated throughout the organization.
“Collectively, these initiatives led to improvements in patient satisfaction, case volume growth, operational efficiency, increased EBITDA and larger partnership distributions,” said Ms. Colón.
