Physician-owned pain clinics admits to overbilling insurance 

A New Jersey pain clinic with locations in Northfield, Vineland and Cape May Courthouse admitted to overbilling insurance companies, according to a Mach 20 news release from the Justice Department. 

What happened?

  • On various dates between November 2015 and January 2020, while a physician owner was traveling, Pain Specialists used his NPI to bill for services requiring his presence or supervision. They received about $58,365.26 for these services.
  • Pain Specialists also falsely listed a physician as the provider for services done by non-physician staff between January 2014 and November 2020, violating Medicare and Medicaid billing rules.
  • They agreed to pay $58,365.26 in restitution, an $81,711.36 criminal fine and a $240,000 civil settlement.
