Physician pay jumped 4.9% in the last year, according to AMGA’s 2025 Medical Group Compensation and Productivity Survey.
The organization gathered data from more than 184,000 providers in 500 medical groups.
Here are five notes to know:
1. Medical specialists experienced a 4% increase in average compensation year over year, closely followed by surgical specialists with a 3.7% rise. Meanwhile, physicians in anesthesiology, radiology and pathology saw a larger boost, reporting a 5.1% increase in earnings over the past year.
2. Primary care physicians reported a 5.7% year-over-year pay increase, an improvement from last year’s 3.6% but slightly below the 6% rise recorded in 2023. Overall, the average primary care physician salary reached $329,780 this year.
Average compensation for 2025 by primary care specialty includes:
- Family medicine: $330,216
- Internal medicine: $347,750
- General pediatrics: $295,248
3. Among medical specialties with over 2,000 providers surveyed, the average annual compensation for 2025 was $516,448.
4. The top three highest-earning specialties in 2025 were:
- Gastroenterology: $633,422
- General cardiology: $615,621
- Hematology and medical oncology: $556,750
5. Although compensation outpaced productivity growth, physicians saw an overall 3.2% increase in compensation per work RVU. Work RVUs themselves rose 1.5% year over year, suggesting a moderate uptick in patient volume.
