There are 51,492 active anesthesiologists and 65,745 active certified registered nurse anesthetists nationwide, according to a white paper from Medicus Healthcare Solutions published May 21.
The workforce management company’s report predicts that the U.S. will face a shortage of 6,300 anesthesiologists by 2036 and 450,000 nurses by 2025.
In addition, more than half of anesthesiologists are older than 55, and 17% are nearing retirement.
The employment outlook in some states is more optimistic than others. In the five states with the highest anesthesiologist employment, overall employment is expected to grow 2.6% between 2022 and 2032.
In the five states with the highest CRNA employment, overall employment is expected to grow 9% from 2022 to 2032.
