The country’s highest-performing ASCs, by specialty: US News

U.S. News & World Report collaborated with CareJourney to evaluate more than 4,300 surgery centers in four specialties for its 2025 Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers ratings. The specialties included colonoscopy and endoscopy, ophthalmology, orthopedics and spine and urology.

The publication used factors such as cost of complications, emergency department visits and inpatient admissions to rank facilities. View the full methodology here

Here are key trends in this year’s rankings:

Gastroenterology, colonoscopy and endoscopy

This specialty had more than 250 ASCs recognized nationwide. The states with the most centers included California, Florida, New York and North Carolina. Organizations such as Atrium Health, Baptist Health and Gastroenterology Associates had multiple centers included, demonstrating the strong presence of both independent and health system-affiliated ASCs in digestive health.

Ophthalmology

The ophthalmology rankings highlighted 230 ASCs across the country, with a concentration in Florida, California and Texas — states with large aging populations driving demand for cataract and LASIK procedures. Many specialty eye centers and academic-affiliated ASCs were featured.

Spine and orthopedics

The orthopedics and spine category had a strong representation in Florida, Texas, California, and Tennessee, with more than 180 ASCs recognized. A notable trend was the presence of multiple physician-owned orthopedic surgery centers.

Urology

The urology rankings identified more than 60 high-performing ASCs, with Florida, Texas and Maryland leading in recognized facilities. Urologic Surgery Center of Arizona and Virginia Mason Medical Center were among the notable names. The rankings include a mix of standalone urology centers and multispecialty ASCs that offer urological procedures in addition to orthopedic, gastroenterology or general surgery services.
