The specialties predicted to have physician surpluses, shortages

Anatomic pathology and clinical pathology will have the biggest shortage of physicians in the future, according to a recent report from Axuall. 

The specialty with the largest projected physician surplus is emergency medicine. 

The 2025 Clinician Workforce Insights Report analyzed data points including claims data, facility affiliations, utilization rates and average tenures to predict which specialties will have the greatest physician shortages and surpluses. 

Here are the five specialties that could experience physician surpluses and shortages going forward:

Top 5 anticipated surpluses

  1. Emergency medicine physicians
  2. Surgical critical care physicians
  3. Neonatal-Perinatal medicine physicians
  4. Pulmonary disease physicians
  5. Physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians

Top 5 anticipated shortages

  1. Anatomic pathology and clinical pathology physicians
  2. Vascular and interventional radiology physicians
  3. Ophthalmology physicians
  4. Urology physicians
  5. Anesthesiology physicians
