The top-paying industries for nurse practitioners

Nurse practitioners have the highest annual mean wage in residential intellectual and developmental disability, mental health and substance abuse facilities, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The average annual wage for NPs across all industries and practice settings is $132,000.

The agency released updated compensation data in April to reflect 2024 information, the most recent available. 

Here are the 10 highest-paying industries for NPs, along with the average annual salary:

  1. Residential intellectual and developmental disability, mental health and substance abuse facilities: $163,000
  2. Scientific research and development services: $155,150
  3. Psychiatric and substance abuse hospitals: $144,860
  4. Other ambulatory healthcare services: $144,240
  5. Outpatient care centers: $143,600
  6. Specialty (except psychiatric and substance abuse) hospitals: $142,270
  7. Individual and family services: $139,070
  8. General medical and surgical hospitals: $138,340
  9. Offices of dentists: $137,170
  10. Health and personal care retailers: $133,490
