Cardiologists at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in Harrisburg, Pa., are now offering renal denervation, a new treatment option for patients with hard-to-treat high blood pressure.
The catheter-based procedure to treat resistant hypertension lowers blood pressure in patients by reducing the activity of overactive nerves in the arteries that supply blood to the kidneys, according to a June 24 news release from UPMC.
Previously, the procedure was only available to patients in central Pennsylvania through clinical trials.
Hypertension affects nearly half of all adults in the U.S., and can lead to heart disease, stroke, blindness and other heart, brain and kidney conditions if untreated.
The renal denervation procedure was first performed at UPMC Harrisburg on June 20, the release said.
