Virginia CRNA loses license over alleged sexual misconduct

Kevin Coolong, CRNA, a former certified registered nurse anesthetist at Atlantic Anesthesia in Virginia Beach, Va., has been ordered to surrender his license following allegations of inappropriate patient contact, according to a June 3 report from NBC affiliate WAVY.

Mr. Coolong worked at the practice, an affiliate of Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara Health, from June 2008 to August 2024.

He was under investigation after the Virginia Board of Nursing received complaints from four patients who alleged that Mr. Coolong kissed them, stroked them and fondled them while they were sedated, according to the report.

The nursing board found Mr. Coolong guilty of engaging in non-consensual contact with patients at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk.

He surrendered his license to the board following the investigation; in a consent order, he did not confirm or deny wrongdoing.

“The safety and quality of care for our patients is our highest priority,” Sentara spokesperson Mike Kafka told WAVY. “We became aware this morning of the Virginia Board of Nursing consent order against a former Atlantic Anesthesia employee and are pleased that significant action is being taken against him. We intend to fully cooperate with the investigation into this matter.”
