‘Visionary’ Kentucky ophthalmologist dies at 81

Maurice John Jr., MD, an ophthalmologist from Louisville, Ky., died on March 24 at age 81, according to an obituary published by the Courier Journal

Dr. John was a “visionary” in the specialty, according to the obituary. He earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, and went on to complete his residency at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1974. In 2001, he returned to the University of Louisville’s department of ophthalmology to serve as a clinical instructor.

In 1974, he founded the John-Kenyon Eye Center, also in Louisville. He was one of the first physicians in the country to perform radial keratotomy in 1980 and is widely credited for helping to bring the LASIK procedure to the U.S. He was the first ophthalmologist to perform LASIK in both Kentucky and Indiana.

In 1997 he performed the first outpatient cataract surgery and implanted the first Artisan lens for correction of high myopia. Dr. John taught courses in more than 15 different countries, was published over 40 times and has given almost 400 presentations in the field of ophthalmology.
