On March 21, the National Resident Matching Program released statistics for the 2025 match cycle, which began March 17.
2025 saw record-breaking participation in the program, with 47,208 certified applicants. Here are 22 more statistics on March’s match stats:
1. There was a 5.3% increase in certified applicants from 2024, signaling a renewed interest in medicine among young physicians.
2. There were a total of 43,237 positions available in 2025, a 4.2% increase from 2024. The number of certified applicants outpaced available positions. As of 2023, the average age of physicians in the U.S. was 53.9, causing concerns over an aging physician population nearing retirement.
3. Of open MD positions, 93.5% of U.S. MD seniors matched, the same as 2024, while
92.6% of U.S. DO seniors matched, up 0.3% from 2024.
4. Additional program slots were also added in 2025. An additional 1,734 more certified positions were added, 231 more certified programs and 877 additional primary care positions.
5. Orthopedic surgery saw 100% of available residency slots filledf, signaling a promising future among provider shortages.
6. Six states faced unfilled anesthesia slots. However, a majority of positions were filled. Anesthesiologists continue to be critical for every facility and medical specialty nationwide.
7. Internal medicine filled 11,750 positions, 679 more than 2024.
8. Pediatrics added 54 positions this year, with a fill rate of 95.3%, up from 91.8% last year.
9. Family medicine added 144 positions this year, for a total of 5,357. The specialty filled 85% of the positions, down from 87.8% last year.
10. The fill rate for emergency medicine positions rose from 81.8% in 2024 to 97.9% this year.
11. Just 10 OB-GYN spots went unfilled nationwide.
