The ASC industry remains incredibly fragmented, with 67% of facilities being independently owned, but 2024 brought another wave of consolidations driven by major health systems, private equity firms and ASC operators.
In its 2025 Healthcare M&A Report, released on April 22, VMG highlighted 11 of the most significant ASC deals of the year.
Here are 11 notes to know on the significant ASC deals:
1. In April 2024, Tenet’s United Surgical Partners International acquired Covenant Physician Partners from private equity firm KKR. The acquisition added more than 80 locations across 17 states, with a focus on gastroenterology, ophthalmology and optometry.
2. In the second quarter of 2024, USPI added 11 new ASCs to its network. This included a strategic partnership with Florida Orthopedic Institute, which brought three high-volume orthopedic centers performing over 15,000 annual cases.
3. In the third quarter, USPI opened six additional ASCs, including a collaboration with Synergy Orthopedics to launch San Diego’s largest musculoskeletal outpatient surgery center.
4. Throughout 2024, Surgery Partners expanded its presence through several key partnerships. In February, the company entered Indiana via a joint venture with Parkview Health to develop ASCs statewide.
5. In October, Surgery Partners, in collaboration with ValueHealth, opened a new ASC in The Villages, Fla., offering a wide range of specialty services.
6. The expansion continued in November, when Surgery Partners announced a long-term strategic partnership with Duly Health and Care. The company acquired a 26% stake in Duly’s Lombard and Westmont surgery centers in Illinois.
7. In March 2024, TriasMD, the parent company of DISC Surgery Centers, acquired Thousand Oaks Surgery Center in California.
8. Bon Secours Mercy Health and Compass Surgical Partners also scaled their ASC footprint in 2024. Together, they opened multiple centers, including the Springfield Regional Outpatient Surgery Center in Ohio and the Millennium Surgery Center in South Carolina, as part of a strategy to build over 30 centers.
9. In July, Atlas Healthcare Partners partnered with MultiCare Health System to expand surgical services across the Pacific Northwest. This initiative focused on cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and general surgery ASCs to meet rising demand in the region.
10. In August, Atlas formed a joint venture with ChristianaCare to create a network of ASCs across Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The plan includes developing more than 10 centers over the next five years.
11. In December 2024, SCA Health, the ASC arm of Optum, acquired OrthoAlliance, an orthopedic management services organization based in Ohio with over 200 physician partners.
